A movie full of life

The movie, based on Jnanpith awardee K Shivaram Karanth's novel, is a treat for the eyes and music to the ears. No surprise, `Bettada Jeeva' bagged the best environmental film award at the national level and director Sheshadri won laurels for excellently weaving the greenery of Western Ghats into the story with brilliant narration.
The story is centered around a revolutionary youth Shivaramu (Suchendra Prasad) who visits the house of aged couple Gopalaiah (Dattanna) and Shankari (Rameshwari Verma) in Kelabailu. Shivaramu is moved by their hospitality and wins their heart and trust. The couple, though, have a worry. Their son Kelebailu Shambhu Bhatta left home for Bombay and hasn't returned. They seek the youth's help to locate him. They also tell him the circumstances that led to their son leaving home.

The second part of the story captures the traditions of the area where people live amid elephants and tigers. We have kola, a ritual dance, and karpu, a tiger trap, beautifully entwined into the story.

The movie also tells about the inhabitants' ignorance on the freedom movement and Mahatma Gandhi. It deals with people who are content with a life engaged in farming and making enough money to put food on their plates

A highway to gold

The movie, directed by B Suresha, has won the National Award for Best Regional Film. The director has touched upon a contemporary subject of land acquisition for development of a highway. Armed with a lively script, Suresha has narrated the story in such a way the viewer can identify with the characters.

The story has all the elements necessary to strike the right chord with the audience. There is fun, sentiment, ridicule, anxiety and disappointment for the audience, who are given an insight into the darker side of land acquisition and the guile of politicians who fool people in the name of development.

The story takes place in Bislahalli, a remote village where people make a living through farming. They are content, till the government announces its decision to acquire land for the proposed State Highway 108. While people like Madu (Achuth Kumar) take it positively -- he opens a hotel called `Yiganeshwara Highway Hotel' -- others take to the streets.

Puttakka has four acres of agricultural land, where she had buried her husband and is adamant that she won't give up the land for the highway. She goes to Bangalore to meet the chief minister, where she has a bitter experience. Disappointed, Puttakka returns to the village only to see that a bridge has been built on her land. A shocked Puttakka gets to know the realities of development when she sees her daughter getting into prostitution. The rest is how people become helpless when it comes to development.

ARIVU-THE AWARENESS

MISSION: To educate and create health 'Awareness' (Arivu) amongst the people of all sections of society, particularly rural and low socio economic community.

In the last ten years there is a tremendous increase in the incidence of diabetes, hypertension and other related complications, to the extent that patient is presented with the damage of important organs like kidney, heart, eyes and the nervous system. This is probably due to the poor health orientation influenced by poverty, ignorance and fear amongst people in all sections of society.
'Arivu' is an organisation created to battle the ignorance prevailing in the society by educating people about prevention, management and complications of Diabetes.
Once in a month, we select a village or a part of a city as our target community and visit every house in the community to check the blood pressure and glucose level of the civilians. Based on the results, the person is individually made aware of his health condition and the necessary precautions to be taken to counter Diabetes.
'Arivu' organization was founded by a group of volunteers from Karunajeeva Kalyana Trust, Davangere District Chemist and Druggist's Association, Davangere District Medical Representatives' Association and JJM Medical College Junior Doctor's Association led by Dr B.M. Viswanath, Mr Mallikarjun and Mr Anandaraj

Note: People with philanthropic aspirations or pursuits can help us excel in our endeavor through monetary donations made in the name of "Arivu" by a D.D.
